Exploring Governance: Expectations of the Role Across Different Organisations

This will be a practical session for senior leaders and governors alike, with the aim to explore the following themes:

  • Understanding of the purpose of the role of a Governor among key stakeholders in different types of organisations
  • How do Governors work with an organisation to ensure that they add real value to the organisation – involvement between meetings, adding value as a mentor or a coach, providing specialist knowledge or skills etc. 
  • CPD programmes that can be put in place to support & develop Governors to be as effective as possible
  • Case Study discussion exploring the expectations of the role Governors within an education setting, including under the theme of Leadership and Management.

Kate Lou is a seasoned consultant with over 20 years of expertise in leadership, education, and quality within the training and skills sectors. With a strong track record in governance, she has demonstrated strategic vision and operational excellence, leading the development and implementation of quality standards that enhance learner outcomes. Her experience spans working with both colleges and independent training providers, where she has successfully driven quality initiatives, diversified curricula, and supported organisational growth. Currently, Kate sits on four boards, including a chair role, where she specialises in mentoring CEOs and senior leaders on strategic development, quality improvement, and governance training. Her ability to translate visionary ideas into actionable plans has established her as a respected figure in the field. With a Master’s in Education Management and a commitment to fostering high standards, Kate is dedicated to empowering organisations to achieve sustained success through effective governance practices.

Dr Gareth Jones

Dr Gareth Thomas is an award winning Director, with significant experience in successful public sector policy implementation, performance improvement and stakeholder management. Driven by the opportunity to contribute to economic growth, whilst helping others to reach their potential, Gareth is highly experienced at driving change whilst working in politically sensitive environments. Gareth has held a number of senior roles in the skills sector on behalf of Government. Gareth’s role’s included Director of Integrated Employment and Skills for the Learning and Skills Council, leading pre-employment programme design and implementation nationally for the Skills Funding Agency, and Head of the Area Relationship Team (East Midlands). Gareth is a regular speaker at numerous national conferences and events, and has maintained his close relationship with policy makers. More recently Gareth has supported the Local Skills Improvement Planning Process, working closely with East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire). Gareth is currently a Governance Board member for several Independent Training Providers and a University Advisory Board.
